New Village Green - Nether Wallop, Hampshire
The Brief: To clear and level a water meadow,
prepare it and seed it for a new village green. To include a culvert
for drainage with a small bridge for wheelchair access.
The water meadow was very rough and uneven, having
been left as waste ground and detracting from the appearance of
the village. The Parish Council asked Test Valley Gardencare
to clear and re-seed the area so that it could be used as a Village
Green. The ground was rotavated and levelled and a drainage culvert
dug round the perimeter, as the land is prone to flooding. The
area was then stone-picked and harrowed to produce a fine tilth
on which a quality amenity-mix grass seed could be sown. An area
was left uncultivated, containing the original mix of grasses
and plants as a conservation area. A small bridge of sleepers
bedded on gravel was laid across the culvert to allow wheelchair
access on to the green.
